Elvis: An Introduction

I decided to write this blog to explore the the ups-and-downs of volunteering your home to care for rescue dogs. Whether you've fostered before, have dogs of your own or are just interested to know more about rescue I hope this blog documenting his recovery will be a resource for you, as well as a source of entertainment (Let's face it, dogs are funny!).  To kick it off, I asked Elvis to write the introduction:

Hi, my name is Elvis. I am still about 1/3 bald, I have heartworms, I think it's funny to chase cars, and feel it is my duty to mark on anything and everything with no regard for whether I am indoors or out. When I'm not scratching, barking at cars or peeing on your stuff, I am most likely bouncing around like a volleyball or trying to chew on your fingers and toes. I demand at least a 3-mile walk every day and would still like to run around and play fetch with a ball that I will most likely begin to destroy by the fourth throw.

I may not have refined manners, but don't let me fool you! I'm actually the sweetest little bull terrier ever to grace the earth. I may look like a little guy, but I have big dog attitude and spunk. I will do anything you ask me to for a single piece of kibble, I will follow you around and stay right by your feet to be sure that you are always safe, and I will curl up in your lap and sleep for yours. If you'll let me on your bed I will let you cuddle me like a pillow all through the night, and if not I won't make a peep if you ask me to go to my crate.  I won't chase your cat, or even the neighbor's cat, and I always do my vey best to get along with every dog I meet. I don't always understand why they don't want to play as long or as rough as I do and couldn't imagine why they wouldn't want my big ol' head right in their face, but even if they growl at me I am not offended (as long as all of the guys are neutered like me!).  I may come off as uninterested at first, but the truth is I love every person I meet and would love for them all to scratch my back and play with me! When I get excited I hop like a bunny and love to roll around on my back and chew on my toys.

I've had a pretty rough start, but you'd never know it by my fun-loving attitude. I now know that I only deserve the best possible home with the perfect family for me. I am looking for someone who understands what bull terriers are all about, and who can be a strong leader for me to follow so I don't have to worry too much.  I need someone patient who can help me be my best - even when I am at my worst - and someone active who can keep me busy so I don't have to go looking for trouble.  I may be too rough for little kids to handle, so please keep this in mind if you think I may be the dog for you. I am only 18 months old and I plan to be around for many years to come, so I need someone who can commit to loving me for my WHOLE life!

I am really grateful to the nice people at Homeward Bound Dog Rescue for saving my life. Can you believe that the other rescues didn't want me, and after holding on to me for a whole month, someone at ACS was going to kill me? Now I am in a nice foster home with people who love me and are committed to helping me get healthy so I can find a family of my own. They are willing to take care of me as long as it takes, and along the way they are teaching me a lot of neat stuff, and even helping me get over those bad habits I mentioned above! They keep telling me that by the time I am heartworm free I will be the perfect pet, and I have to agree.

I probably will not be ready to get my heartworm treatments until sometime in March, and I am preparing myself for a rough 6-8 weeks of recovery when I won't be able to run or hop... but I will do whatever it takes to be 100% ready for my perfect family!

As you may have guessed, I do a lot of pretty funny things, and sometimes I drive my foster family a bit crazy... but I hope you'll keep reading about me throughout my journey to find a forever home!

Woof! - Elvis
